2023 Physician Fee Schedule - Telehealth Changes

As of November 1st, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) has released the updated Physician Fee Schedule for 2023. The annual Physician Fee Schedule determines which services will be covered by Medicare next year. There are several changes to telehealth for 2023 – we will be covering the most significant of those changes here.

Access and Accessibility: Telehealth Considerations for Patients with Disabilities

From a population and public health standpoint, it is alarming that one in three adults with disabilities aged 18-44 years do not have a regular healthcare provider and have also reported having an unmet healthcare need due to cost in the past year. Additionally, one in four adults with disabilities aged 65 years or older did not have a routine check-up in the past year. The need for telehealth services to help bridge these gaps with patients are great, but there must be considerations when providing these services to these patients. Here are a list of resources that can help you understand and provide better care for patients with a disability.

CMS 2022 Proposed Physician Fee Schedule

Indiana Senate Bill 3 Becomes Public Law

On April 20, 2021, Indiana's Governor Holcomb, signed into law SEA3 (Senate Enrolled Act), a telehealth bill. The bill cleans up some of the standards in previous Indiana laws. 

Below are just some of the details of Indiana's latest telehealth updates.
 *Changes the term 'telemedicine' to 'telehealth'. 
 *Expands the application of the telehealth statute to additional licensed practitioners instead of applying only to prescribers.
**List of providers: athletic trainer, chiropractor, dental hygienist, dentist, diabetes educator, dietitian, genetic counselor, physician, nurse, occupational therapist, behavioral health and human services professional, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician assistant, podiatrist, psychologist, respiratory care practitioner, speech-language pathologist or audiologist.

Modernizing and Clarifying the Physician Self-Referral Regulations

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule on December 2, 2020, aimed at addressing any existing undue regulatory impact and burden of Stark Law. Specifically, exceptions to the physician self-referral law have been created for certain value-based compensation agreements between or among physicians, providers, and suppliers.

What a year this has been! While most of us probably can’t wait to say good-bye to 2020, one of the good things that has come from the COVID-19 pandemic is the policy changes for telehealth and the ubiquitous acceptance of it from providers all over the world. Here in the United States, the National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers (NCTRCs) were here to have your back. Our origins began in 2006, with the inception of the Health Resources Services Administration’s Telehealth Resource Center Program, which is funded out of the Office for the Advancement of Telehealth and the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy.

If you live, work, or travel in a rural area of the United States, you’ve probably gotten stuck behind a slow-moving farm implement. They can be seen out and about every spring and fall like clockwork. Can you imagine what the person in the cab looks like? You probably envision faded blue jeans, work boots, and ball cap. Have you ever tried to imagine what their day looks like? Did they start before the sun was up? Are they grandparents or parents? Did their children see them at the dinner table yesterday? Did they crawl out of the tractor late last night and are they trying to finish up today? The list of questions goes on and on.
