Happy Halloween

Posted by: Becky Sanders on Friday, October 2, 2020

As we flip our calendar to October, the weather across the Midwest is getting cooler, and we are expecting our first frost any day. Also, as if 2020 hasn’t been a crazy enough year, in October we will have 2 full moons. The first was on October 1st, and the second one will be a full Hunter’s Moon on October 31st! The second full moon in any given month is called a Blue Moon. If you’re not familiar with the terms ‘harvest moon’, ‘hunter’s moon’, or ‘blue moon’, check out this article on the Farmer’s Almanac website.

Celebrating Your Telemedicine Program

Across the Midwest, many of my friends and neighbors are experiencing the abundance of fall harvest in their vegetable gardens and sharing the various canned vegetables, salsa, and home baked good with others.

UMTRC Annual Conference

It’s so hard to believe that summer is nearing the halfway point for many students who normally return to their classrooms in August.  While some schools have released their social distancing plans, many others have not.  It seems likely that face masks will be required in most public areas throughout the remainder of the year.

Graduation and Summer Fun

Posted by: Becky Sanders on Friday, June 5, 2020

May was a surreal month. Instead of attending graduation parties, and gorging on cake and junk food, many of us attended parades of cars with high school graduates and their families driving down main street like my high school did this year.

Smell the Flowers

We have officially survived the month of April!  For many of us, it has been the longest month of our lives as we try to balance working from home, teaching our children via e-learning while schools are shut down, taking care of our aging parents, and trying to keep our pantries stocked.

An Abundance of Showers

Posted by: Becky Sanders on Wednesday, April 1, 2020

As we enter the month of April, many of us look for the cleansing showers that will result in nature coming back to life with green grass and a wild variety of flowers blooming and ushering us into May.

Reflections amidst COVID-19

In the past month, the coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it is now known, has changed the way we live our lives, not just in the United States, but all over the world.  The academic history of pandemics is a fascinating topic, as seen in a recent article by Nicholas LePan, on the Visual Capitalist's website.

A new Generation of House Calls

Posted by: Becky Sanders on Wednesday, September 4, 2019

Long gone are the days when doctors would travel around town calling upon their patients at home.  But are they really?  In a 2010 survey, 19% of American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) members were making a minimum of one house calls per week. How does that compare to virtual health care visits made by patients, who from the comfort of their own homes, connect with primary care physicians using secure videoconferencing?  Deloitte’s 2018 survey found that of the 23% of consumers who have tried it, 77% of them reported a high level of satisfaction with their virtual health care visit.  A fascinating business model, to say the least.

UMTRC Conference Wrap-Up

Thanks to everyone who helped make our 1st Annual Conference such a success!

Is your door open, closed, or somewhere in between? Telehealth and Telemedicine can be intimidating, scary, exciting, and to some completely absurd. Some close the door, and think, absolutely not, we cannot see patients and communicate with other providers through a screen.

What's a mile long and packed with 45,000 people from over 90 countries? If you guessed the HIMSS 2019 Annual Conference, you would be correct!

A highlight of the show for me was the intentional efforts being put forth to modernize patient bedside education.

Direct Primary Care has come to the state of Indiana. Effective July 1, 2017, with the full approval of the Indiana General Assembly's Senate and House Chambers, Enrolled Senate Bill 303 became law.

In July, Indiana scored a major win on the telemedicine legislative front. A new telemedicine state statute went into effect which expands the use of telemedicine together with certain prescribing rights (without an in-person office visit).

As of March 25, 2016, there have been 133 telehealth related bills introduced in 30 states across the nation. The most common legislation addresses reimbursement, telehealth professional standards, the need for in-person examinations, prescribing, and cross-state licensing.
